Why Support Local

Writer: Kurt DaKurt Da

You may have already heard this a thousand times before. Businesses all over the country always emphasize it. You see it on ads and hear it from your friends who are small time business owners: support local. Well maybe the reason why you’re hearing it all the time is because you need to. Especially in times like this, when there’s a pandemic going on, and our local economy is struggling, the best you can do to help is to put local businesses at the top of your list instead of heading straight to international and commercial ones.

Here are the reasons why:

  1. Local businesses help build the local economy. They use local resources, service providers, farms and markets.

  2. They employ people from the local community. Sometimes they even offer better working conditions and benefits.

  3. They care about the community’s well being and future. SMEs provide a different kind of care and quality in their products because most independent businesses are actually run by people. SMEs also offer better and personalized customer service.

  4. They help build and promote a community character. These small businesses bring uniqueness to a city and help it avoid being homogenized. For example, the group of restaurants now in Juna Subdivision are uniquely Davao and you can’t find them anywhere else in the Philippines.

  5. They create familial relationships with their customers. Local businesses feel more like home because the owners are easy to get to know. They can cater more to what you need.

There are a lot of benefits from supporting locals. You are mostly helping the people from your community and making sure that your economy can survive this difficult time. Here in Davao, there are a lot of local businesses that are booming and also some that have been there for a long time which still needs your support. Malagos Garden Resort’s support local movement for example has been there since the 1990s, and it continues to stay true to that advocacy with its new business called Malagos Homegrown Produce. When you shop local and eat local, you help a farmer, a supplier, or a cashier survive the day. Support our community and shop local now at www.malagoshomegrownproduce.com!
